Philosophy

Our fundamental belief is that shifa (healing) is absolutely in the hands of Allah (swt).

The foundation of our method of treatment is the basic tenet that any treatment regimen, while focused on curing the ailment under consideration, must never end in any harm to the patient. That is why we have chosen the “Herbal Treatment” route which we consider to be the best available option for treating any health disorder.

Our method of diagnosis and treatment of health disorders is derived from thousands of years of research and tried and tested concepts first introduced by none other than the renowned Father of Modern Medicine, the Greek physician Hippocrates (460 – 370 BCE), and later further developed and refined by equally significant and outstanding personalities of medical history including the famous Persian physicians:

1

Abu Ali al-Husayn ibn Abd Allah ibn Sina (980 CE – 1037 CE), also known as Avicenna, who wrote the famous Kitab al-Qanun Fi Al-Tibb (Canon of Medicine) which remained one of the most popular medical textbook in the world for centuries; and

2

Ali ibn al-Abbas al-Majusi (c. 925-994), also known as Masoudi or Haly Abbas, who wrote Kitab Kamil al-Sinaàh al-Tibbiyyah (Complete Book of the Medical Art) which remained the most celebrated medical book prior to Ibn Sina’s Canon of Medicine; and

3

Abu Bakr Muhammad Ibn Zakariya al-Razi (c. 854–930), also known as Rhazes or Rasis, who wrote the once most sought after book in medical history, Kitab al-Hawi Fi Al-Tibb (The comprehensive Book on Medicine).

Due to these Greek/Persian roots of our approach, it is also called Unani (which is a Persian word for “Greek”) Medicine.

Hippocrates believed that the human body is governed by the basic concept of balancing body humors (for simplicity’s sake we can call them “fluids”): Blood (hot/wet), Phlegm (cold/wet), Yellow Bile (hot/dry), and Black Bile (cold/dry). Imbalance of humors causes disease which can usually be remedied by a mix of dietary restrictions and pharmacopoeia.

Each person’s unique combination of the states of each of the humors, described earlier, determines his/her Mezaj (temperament). We believe that every species is different and within each species every individual is distinct, especially by way of its Mezaj. Similarly every disease and every drug has its own Mezaj. Hence the need for patient specific customized diagnosis and treatment approach is absolutely essential for optimal results.

While diagnosis of each and every ailment through just a simple pulse reading or visual analysis of early morning urine sample of the patient is a myth, the type and quality of pulse and other visual markers in the urine sample along with other information about the patient does help us greatly in narrowing down our diagnosis of many disorders of the human body.

Unani pharmacopeia is based on medicinal elements that are derived from a diverse range of all natural biological and non biological materials. Among those approximately 75% are plant based, 15% are animal based, and 10% are mineral based materials. When it comes to therapeutic plants, our medicines may be derived from any of the various parts of the plant including leaves, flowers, flower buds, roots, bark, fruits, and seeds. This botanical universe extends to materials such as algae, fungi, lichens, mosses, ferns, and etc. We also use corals, minerals, musk, and other living and non living organisms in our treatment.

Knowledge of various medicinal materials and their exact combination in the right proportion is the foundation of successful Unani treatment. This is what sets us apart from other practitioners – a bold claim backed by almost a century old family practice, thorough training and qualification, and above all, thousands upon thousands of satisfied patients.

We strongly focus on use of dietary restrictions as a way of supporting our treatment regimen. In some cases, just our recommended dietary program by itself results in successful healing (without the need for any medicines). We do not charge the patient for such guidance and support.

The significance of Unani medicine cannot be ignored as it is the very foundation of Modern (Allopathic) medicine. The concepts of medical diagnosis, prognosis, drug and surgical interventions, and medical ethics were formally developed by Unani Medicine. A significant portion of contemporary medical vocabulary still includes terms that originated in old Unani (Greek) traditions. For example, words like Alopecia, Gynecology, Hemiplagia, Migraine, and many others are all Unani terms.

That said, Unani medicine remains radically different than modern medicine. One key difference is that all natural Unani medicine does not have the same preponderance of serious drug side effects. Our all natural traditions are much older than allopathic medicine; and in the hands of a genuine herbal medicine practitioner, they offer optimal treatment efficacy. Contrary to popular belief, we do NOT use ANY allopathic medicine in our treatment. In fact, we strictly advise against use of heavy allopathic medications, such as Steroids and Cortisones, whose side effects often leave the patient with serious health complications.

We do incorporate use of modern technology, such as modern lab tests done at reputable medical institutions, not only in formulating our diagnosis and treatment strategy but also in measuring the performance of our treatment. We always try to keep the need for such lab tests to the minimum.

Herbal medicine treatment is inexpensive, generally permanent, and with no or minimal side effects. It focuses on treating the root cause of the disorder rather than providing just temporary symptomatic relief. It focuses on harmonizing complete systems of the body and not just individual parts of that system. Another major benefit of Herbal medicine that remains underappreciated is the fact that often the treatment regimen has a broad spectrum effect healing disorders in the body in addition to the one being targeted.

Please note that our family has always adhered to the highest standards of ethics. That is why we do NOT take all cases. We accept patients in our treatment program ONLY if we think that our treatment has the potential to benefit the patient. We do not perform any surgeries; we do not provide dental care; and we do not profess availability of treatment for late stage serious illnesses. Diabetes, Pneumonia, Fissure, Fistula, and Tuberculosis patients are referred to allopathic doctors.

We always try to keep the need for lab tests (such as ultrasounds, MRI’S, X-Rays, Blood Tests, and etc) to the minimum.

We generally do NOT believe in a drug regimen that goes on and on for years, and at times, for life. Of course, there are logical exceptions such as in case of diabetes where insulin intake might be the only option.
