Liver Disorders

Liver disorders are collectively called Amraz-e-Kabid in Arabic and Amraz-e-Jiger in Urdu. It is the largest organ and a gland in the human body. It is the only organ that possesses the capacity to regenerate itself. It is a workhorse of the human body, continuously filtering toxic materials and excreting them. At the same time, it is a very delicate organ, prone to damage due to unhealthy lifestyle and disease. That is why in Hikmat, Liver is described as one of the Uzwa-e-Raees and Uzwa-e-Sharif organs due to its dual nature.

Liver disease can be inherited (genetic) or caused by a variety of factors that damage the liver, such as viruses and alcohol use. Sugar and glucose derivatives are also seen as having a negative effect on a diseased liver. Over time, damage to the liver may result in scarring (cirrhosis), which can lead to liver failure, a life-threatening condition.

Any shrinkage and hardness of the liver is an extremely serious matter. Severe cases are hard to treat even in Hikmat. That is why it is strongly recommended that the patient seek treatment as soon as symptoms appear.

Hakeem Rehan has a specific way of approaching diagnosis and treatment. Patient history, pulse analysis, and Qaroora (urine inspection) help the Tabib narrow down the root cause (such as trauma, infection, heredity, and relevant humor imbalances). Whenever necessary, we do make use of modern lab tests in arriving at and confirming diagnosis and in monitoring of treatment progress. Our treatment plan is very simple. Keeping in mind patient’s mezaj, patient is then immediately put on a strict dietary plan coupled with proprietary Unani medication (2-4 week for Hepatitis A and E; 4-6 week for Hepatitis B; and 12-24 week for Hepatitis C) drug regimen consisting of various processed and unprocessed herbs and etc., in the form of Herbal tea, madjoon (paste), and Syrups.
