Facial Palsy

Facial Palsy, also called Bell’s palsy, is a type of facial paralysis that results in a partial or complete inability to control the facial muscles characteristically usually on one side of the face. This may lead multiple motor and non motor dysfunctions in the facial region.

It is our experience that in majority of the cases this disorder is often recurring.

Symptoms

Sudden numbness and/or weakness and/or paralysis on one side of the face, drooping, drooling, loss of eyelid control, loss of tear duct control, loss of muscular control of the mouth, loss of ability to taste, loss of hearing or increased sensitivity to sound, pain behind the ears, and etc.

Causes

Onset of paralysis is generally due to damage to the facial nerve as a result of disease, trauma, and etc. In Unani medicine, the relevant nerve function is also deemed to have been greatly affected by pre existing genetic conditions; lifestyle choices such as diet (food items like some meats, vegetables, fruits/fruit juices, and dairy products), crash dieting, addiction to alcohol and mind altering drugs, consumption of non Unani medicines (like blood thinners); and exposure to chemicals like hair dyes; and infections, stress, and etc.

Management and Treatment

My (Hakeem Syed Muhammad Rehan Alam’s) family has been successfully treating all kinds of facial nerve disorders for more than 88 years. It is one of our family’s signature treatments and our expertise in this field is well known. We have a proprietary way of approaching diagnosis and treatment. Patient history, pulse analysis, and Qaroora (urine inspection) help the Tabib narrow down the root cause (such as trauma, infection, heredity, and relevant humor imbalances). Whenever necessary, we do make use of modern lab tests in arriving at and confirming diagnosis and in monitoring of treatment progress. Our treatment plan is very simple. Patient is immediately put on a strict dietary plan coupled with generally up to 4-6 week Unani drug regimen consisting of various processed and unprocessed herbs etc.
